Jardin public and Parc Bordelais
Laid out in the 18th century then redesigned as an English-style garden, the Jardin public is the city centre’s lungs: lawns, ponds, a bandstand and a botanical garden. People come to read, picnic and let early conversations unfold here. To the west, Parc Bordelais is more family-oriented, with its open-air theatre, carousels and shaded alleys that make it ideal for a Sunday date.
Garonne quays, from bridge to bridge
From the Pont de Pierre, built under Napoleon, the landscaped quays run for nearly five kilometres to the Pont Jacques-Chaban-Delmas, whose lifting deck greets large ships. In between, cycle paths, lawns and groups of joggers share the left bank, while the Parc aux Angéliques extends the walk on the wilder, quieter right bank.
Getting some air outside the centre
For wider open spaces, head to the Lac de Bordeaux, to the north, where you can ride a bike, pedal a boat or enjoy a terrace. On the renovated industrial side, the former submarine base now hosts exhibitions and concerts. On Lyad, people from Bordeaux share their favourite trails; a chance to meet the person you will walk them with.
